Hi, Did you know that the Maryland Insurance Commissioner denied the CareFirst attempt to convert to a non-profit so that now it makes it unlikely that CareFirst can become a for-profit operation? There is still work to be done. However, this is another victory for all who care about health insurance for all who need it. You probably already know about the deal reached between CareFirst and Children's Hospital. It means that thousands of area children will continue to have access to the region's best facility for pediatric care. Thank you for any help that you provided in making this happen. Either I or someone whom I know will derive incalculable benefits from this development. I want to give thanks to all of the Maryland, D.C. and Virginia officials who made this happen. However, I also want to indicate my worry that if CareFirst does convert to a for-profit what we have seen in this threat to health care for children is probably a foreshadowing of what is to come in the event of a for-profit conversion. The Maryland legislature still has to sign off on Commissioner Larsen's opinion to ensure Maryland opposes the conversion. Also, D.C. and Delaware need to oppose the conversion as well.
