Dear Friend, By now you may know about the lead contamination in DC's water. Did you know that action by dozens of D.C. residents is making a difference. By pressing government officials, D.C. residents and their families and friends have helped gain some important solutions to the problem. On March 6, Brita filter pitchers became available to some families, albeit leaving many unserved. On March 9, the city announced plans to perform testing of water at additional child-serving facilities such as recreation centers. Some expedited lead line replacement has begun. However, the need for comprehensive action is clear since all children in the city could be at risk for lead in water poisoning due to findings in Arlington, which pipes in D.C.'s water and uses no service lines. Now, we need to work to help the government finish the job that it has tentatively started. Some ideas include completing replacement of all lead lines in 3 to 5 years; free filtration systems or bottled water to all families, including apartment dwellers, effective outreach and education, tax rebates for expenses; listing of houses and schools that have already tested for high levels.
