Status of D.C. Vouchers: Call Now! We Still Have A Fighting Chance!
September 11, 2003. Vouchers are not dead in Congress yet. In the dark of night on September 10, 2003, the U.S. House of Representatives held a vote and narrowly approved school vouchers for D.C by a margin of one vote (209 - 208) . But indeed, the vote was held while at least 12 voucher-opponent members of Congress were away at the scheduled Congressional Black Caucus presidential candidates debate at Morgan State University in Baltimore. Stop D.C. Vouchers urges public education supporters to stay the course and tell their Senators to vote AGAINST vouchers for Washington, D.C. at (202)224-3121, where the Capitol switchboard operator will connect you to the office of your Senators. (Please remember to call BOTH Senators for your state). The Senate vote could be held at any time on their version of the voucher bill.
Please spread the word to all of your friends and relatives. Tell them that a federally funded private school voucher program will destroy public education as we know it. If the legislation passes, it will be the first such time that federal tax dollars have been used to fund private school tuition.
Why are vouchers bad? They have no accountability for results, and permit discrimination based on religion, disability, gender, and sexual orientation. In Washington, D.C. vouchers are being imposed by Congress against the will of D.C. residents because D.C. residents lack the real democracy that Americans are dying to bring to Iraq. D.C. residents lack full self governance and a vote in Congress.
